The Battle At Vienna - 1683

Tonight we had our first mini history party. We are reading about The Battle at Vienna which was the Muslim Ottoman Empire's first attempt to take over Vienna, Austria. The Turks invaded Vienna by digging tunnels under the walls into the city.

Two bakers heard the tunnelers in the wee hours of the morning. They alerted the soldiers and the tunnelers were driven back. According to the legend, the bakers invented a new kind of bread in honor of the occasion: rolls shaped like the crescent emblem on the Turkish flag, which they called croissants.

We also learned about Ahmet III and how he became known as the "Tulip King".
It was a last minute party so it was low key but really fun for the boys. So far I really like The Story of the World. We are on volume 3 Chapter 18. I wish we didn't have to just jump in there but we are trying to get on the same schedule as the Four Year Plan which coincides with the seminary schedule. Since it rotates every 4 years we will eventually be back at Volume 1 and it will make more sense.
